The Gilded Age

Wednesday, May 7 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Register online.

Sponsored by the Sterling Heights Historical Commission, this program covers America in the late 19th century when the U.S. experienced rapid economic growth, industrialization, and corruption. It was also an era that spawned a battle between "old money" and the nouveau riche, which brought about an excess in society parties and homes, particularly in New York and New Port, Rhode Island. We will discuss the Astors and Vanderbilts (and more!), their homes and their connection to British Aristocracy, as well as their financial support of English country manors. The presentation includes photos from visits to these abodes and palaces in both the U.S and England as well as tours of the filming sites of HBO's "The Gilded Age" in Newport and Troy, New York. We take a peek into the other side of society, the obsolescence of a lifestyle, and a glimpse of what the future holds.
