June is National Pet Preparedness Month! Consider your pet's needs when establishing your family's emergency preparedness plan.
Build a Pet Emergency Kit
To build your pet's emergency kit, you will want to incorporate the following: a 2-week supply of pet food, portable bowls, a travel crate, their collar/harness and leash, potty supplies, comfort items such as toys or blankets, and any medications your pet may need.
Have a Pet-Friendly Evacuation Plan
Consider where you would go with your pet in the event of an emergency evacuation. Research pet-friendly hotels in advance. Take note of weight/breed restrictions, the maximum number of pets allowed, if the hotel requires a crate, and any added pet fees. Also consider the extra travel time involved to allow for potty and walk breaks!
Familiarize Yourself With Local Animal Shelters
If you are unsure how to care for your pet during emergencies, reach out to Chesapeake Animal Services for advice and information. If you are ever separated from your pet during an emergency, check your local shelters in-person and provide your pet's photo to file a lost pet report. Pets can travel surprising distances, so acquaint yourself with surrounding city shelters as well. Find more lost pet prevention tips.
Microchip Your Pet
Keep pet identification updated and on hand in the event of an emergency. Have your pet wear a collar with ID tags, keep updated pet photos on your phone, place medical records and pet registration in your evacuation kit, and update your pet's microchip information to enhance the likelihood of reuniting if ever separated.
