Portland, OR - Today, the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Louisiana v. Callais struck a major blow to the Voting Rights Act, eliminating protections that ensure minority voting representation.
The Republican-appointed Supreme Court majority ruled 6-3 in favor of striking down Louisiana's congressional map in a decision that effectively renders Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act impossible to enforce. With this ruling, the Court undermined decades of progress that ensured Black, Latino, AANHPI, Native American, and Alaska Native voters received fair representation.
Last September, Trump's DOJ explicitly asked the Court to allow Republican legislators to weaken, and in some cases even eliminate, the voting power of communities of color. Today's decision is a direct result of this request, furthering Trump and the MAGA party's plot to rig congressional maps in an effort to silence the voting power of Black and Latino voters ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
In response, Democrats across the country are stepping up to ensure the voices of all Americans will be heard in November and in every election that follows.
"I am outraged by this decision from the Court," said Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Nathan Soltz. "This is an unprecedented step back in the fight for racial justice and fair representation. Trump and the GOP know that they're facing defeat in the midterms as Americans suffer from skyrocketing costs, and this is their attempt to silence voters. But make no mistake: Democrats across the country will take every measure to ensure that all Americans have their voices heard this November."
