City launches 'Be Seen' campaign for Pedestrian Safety Month

In recognition of October as National Pedestrian Safety Month, the City of Fairfield and regional partners have launched the "Be Seen" safety campaign. Built around the core taglines "Be Seen" and "Wave Then Walk," the initiative promotes mutual recognition between drivers and pedestrians through simple gestures like eye contact, a wave, or a friendly nod before entering crosswalks.

The campaign also ties into International Walk and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 7, when students, families, and communities are encouraged to walk and roll to school while highlighting the importance of safe routes and pedestrian safety.

Be Seen will help spread the core message, emphasizing that pedestrians should make eye contact before stepping off the curb and use a wave or nod to confirm mutual recognition, while drivers must slow down and remain alert. Ultimately, road safety is a shared responsibility for everyone in the community.

To maximize community reach, the city is collaborating with the Fairfield Police Department, Solano Safe Routes to School, and the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District. Together, they will distribute classroom messaging to raise public safety awareness and teach youth and families practical crossing habits directly in local neighborhoods and school zones.

"We are so pleased to join the "Be Seen" campaign in partnership with the City of Fairfield and Safe Routes to School," said FSUSD Superintendent Jennifer Sachs. "Visibility matters, and we all play a role in keeping pedestrians safe. We want our students to be confident, aware, and seen as they travel to and from our schools."
