WASHINGTON D.C. - Resident Commissioner, Pablo José Hernández, announced the allocation of $24,094,632.85 in federal funds through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for permanent work at the Fernando Sanabria Multi-Sports Complex, as a result of FEMA-DR-4339-PR (Hurricane María). This funding is authorized under Section 406 of the Robert T. Stafford Act.
The Resident Commissioner anticipates more announcements in the future: "These funds are the result of previous natural disasters, so it is expected that FEMA will continue to allocate funds for the affected municipalities. Within the political realities of the Federal Capital, I will continue working with both Republicans and Democrats to ensure these funds are allocated and announced," concluded Hernández.
As a result of the impact of Hurricane María, the Fernando Sanabria Multi-Sports Complex in Rincón suffered severe damage. This complex, built approximately in 1990, includes a baseball field, a basketball court, tennis courts, and an outdoor gym. The work to be done includes debris removal, contamination control, demolition of structures, installation of access wells, pipes, drains, sewers, headwalls, trench excavation, backfill, asphalt paving, mattresses, and gabion walls.
The work also includes painting, replacement of signs, panels, repair of columns, control panels, lighting, cleaning and unclogging of drains, site electrical wiring, replacement of chain-link fences, pipes, synthetic rubber on the track, grills, railings, plates, lockers, bathroom partitions, floors, basketball hoops, doors, windows, counters, decks, ventilation units, mesh, sealing, fountains, split units, sound systems, benches, hand dryers, and beams.
It is expected that as FEMA continues releasing reconstruction funds for natural disasters, more municipalities and entities will benefit to mitigate the island's infrastructure challenges.
