Overview
Speeding through school zones is a dangerous and potentially deadly problem. The school zone safety camera program is intended to reduce the number of speeding vehicles traveling through school zones. This school zone safety program includes 33 public, private, and charter schools.
Enforcement
School zones will be clearly marked with additional posted speed limit signs, regulatory time placards, and photo-enforced signs. This warning signage helps achieve the goal of slowing vehicles down, which means fewer crashes and fewer injuries. Cameras will be used to identify vehicles traveling over the posted speed limit. Anyone in the designated school zone driving 11 mph or more over the posted speed limit will receive a violation in the mail.
Our goal is to have the School Zone Speed Cameras implemented at the start of the 2024 school year, through a communications process and a 30-day grace period during which warnings will be issued. This warning period will encourage drivers to slow down and change their driving habits. During this warning period, violators will receive a warning in the mail that carries no fine.
Speed cameras will be active and enforced on school days from 30-minutes prior to school starting until 30 minutes after school has ended. This includes enforcing the normal speed limit of the roadway throughout the entire day while school is in session. This violation is a civil violation and is not considered a traffic violation. The violation is $100.
The program will begin in a phased approach.
Goal
We're committed to slowing down drivers and protecting our kids. Please drive safely in our school zones and in our community. Our goal is ZERO. Zero injuries, zero crashes and zero endangered lives.
FAQs
Why did we implement this program?
The school zone safety camera program is intended to reduce the number of speeding vehicles traveling through school zones. Violations are issued in accordance with Florida Statute 316.0776.
What is a school speed zone violation?
A violation occurs when a driver travels 11 mph or more over the posted speed limit in a school zone 30-minutes prior to school starting, throughout the day while children are in school, and until 30 minutes after school has ended.
How much is the violation?
Violations will be assessed a $100 penalty, and no points will be assessed. If the fine is not paid in a timely fashion a "Uniform Traffic Citation" will be issued and increased penalties could be assessed including court costs.
What are the benefits:
According to the NHTSA, an average of 3 children were killed and an estimated 429 children were injured every day in traffic crashes in 2022. Small differences in speed can make a huge difference, especially in school zones. The goal of the school zone safety camera program is to increase the safety of students, staff, and all pedestrians in school zones.
