On the Meeting with the Director of the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of Chinese Academy of Sciences
On January 13, 2026, at the Secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Beijing SCO Deputy Secretary-General Batyr Tursunov held a meeting with Zhang Yuanming, Director of the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Deputy Secretary-General emphasized the growing importance of ecology and environmental protection issues in the Organization's cooperation agenda. He noted the development of cooperation among SCO member states in the fields of applied research, introduction of advanced "green" technologies, and the training of relevant specialists, as well as the important role of the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography in these processes.

Zhang Yuanming provided information on the main areas of work of the Institute and joint projects with partners in SCO countries. Particular attention in the Institute is paid to such areas as ecological restoration, combating desertification, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development.
He has also highlighted important forms of practical cooperation including "SCO Member States Scientific and Technical Information Exchange Platform," the activities of the Central Asia Ecological and Environmental Research Center and observation and research stations. The Institute also maintains close ties with international organizations, including the UN.
The parties agreed to maintain working contacts.
