Bronx, NY - NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx today announced that two of its midwives, Denise Wharton, CNM, MSN, and Melissa Creighton, DNP, CNM, have been inducted as Fellows of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) Class of 2025, one of the profession's highest honors. The ACNM Fellowship is a rare and prestigious recognition awarded to midwives who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, clinical excellence, outstanding scholarship, and sustained contributions to advancing midwifery and improving maternal and newborn care. This distinction places Wharton and Creighton among an elite group of practitioners who have made transformative impacts on the profession.
As Director of Midwifery at North Central Bronx Hospital, Wharton has championed equity in maternal health care throughout her career. "I am deeply honored to be named a Fellow of the American College of Nurse-Midwives," Wharton said. "This recognition reflects not only my personal journey but the collective efforts of the incredible midwifery teams I've had the privilege to work alongside throughout my career. I am committed to advancing equity in maternal health care and ensuring that every birthing person receives culturally responsive, high-quality care."
Creighton's induction is particularly notable as she also received this year's ACNM Excellence in Education Award. She presented her doctoral project-completed at North Central Bronx Hospital-on using music therapy to improve outcomes for laboring mothers at the ACNM 70th Annual Meeting. "I am deeply honored and filled with gratitude to be inducted into the ACNM Fellowship," Creighton said. "I am so proud to stand among leaders who have dedicated their lives to advancing midwifery and improving outcomes of all mothers and babies."
Both midwives continue their work serving birthing families at North Central Bronx Hospital.
