Commemorations of the Jewish resistance and the February Strike

Commemoration of the Jewish resistance at 13.30

Stichting Na de Oorlog organises this commemoration of the Jewish resistance during the Second World War. In February 1941, Jewish defence groups fought here to protect local residents and shopkeepers from violence by the WA, the paramilitary organisation of the NSB.

Location

Monument Joods Verzet 1940-1945, at the corner of the Amstel and Zwanenburgwal, next to the Stopera.

Register

Online registration closed on 21 February.

After the ceremony

There will be an informal gathering at Café Café aan de Amstel.

Commemoration of the February Strike at 16.45

The commemoration starts at 16.45 at De Dokwerker on Jonas Daniël Meijerplein.

In 1941, tens of thousands of people went on strike to protest against the anti-Jewish measures introduced by the Nazis. The strike began in Amsterdam and spread to other cities. In 1946, Amsterdam was awarded the motto 'Heroic, determined, compassionate' in recognition of this act of resistance.

Flowers

The committee will lay a wreath of willow branches and seasonal flowers from the organic florist De Aanzet. You may watch the wreath laying or place flowers yourself.
