Hyde-Smith supports bill to expand rural emergency care through new grant programs

By Magnolia State News

U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith announced on Mar. 30 her support for new legislation aimed at improving emergency care services in rural areas by creating two federal grant programs for community health centers, clinics, and local health departments.

The Rural Health Innovation Act (S.4204), introduced with U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn, is intended to address workforce shortages and long travel times for emergency care in places like Mississippi, where there are about 240 Federally Qualified Health Centers and a similar number of Rural Health Clinics. The act would provide competitive grants administered by the Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration.

"I know firsthand how so many people in rural Mississippi are affected by being so far away from emergency care. Our goal with these new grant programs is to help rural health centers and clinics serve the walk-in urgent care needs for a rural community and serve as a triage center and staging facility for necessary air or ambulance transports to area emergency departments," Hyde-Smith said.

The bill has bipartisan support, including cosponsorship from U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper, and backing from organizations such as the National Rural Health Association and the Mississippi Department of Health.

Hyde-Smith is also an original cosponsor of the Save Struggling Hospitals Act (S.4233), which seeks to ensure fair Medicare reimbursement rates for hospitals in low-wage areas like those found across Mississippi. The bill aims to prevent hospital closures by codifying a policy that increases Medicare wage index values for hospitals in the bottom 25th percentile.

According to her official website, Hyde-Smith was elected as the first woman to represent Mississippi in the U.S. Senate after serving as commissioner of agriculture and commerce, as well as chairman of the Agriculture Committee during her twelve years in the state senate. She serves on key Senate committees including Appropriations; Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry; Energy and Natural Resources; and Rules and Administration.

Her platform includes commitments to veterans' benefits access, pro-life initiatives protecting unborn children, conservative principles while serving all residents of Mississippi, advocating for agriculture growth, job creation supporting economic development statewide-all detailed on her official website.
