ATLANTA - State Representative Angie O'Steen (R-Ambrose) was recently appointed by House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) to serve on the Joint Study Committee on Generational Sustainability of Family Farms.
"The fight for sustainable agriculture isn't fought in a boardroom; it's fought and won with the sweat, dirt and passion from farmers on their land," said Rep. O'Steen. "I would like to offer a public thank you to Speaker Jon Burns for his confidence in me by appointing me as one of four House Agriculture Committee members to this Joint Study Committee. I am honored to take the concerned voices of our rural farm families within my district -from the tractor seat where my husband, son and countless friends sit -to the State Capitol. As the wife of a fourth-generation farmer, I understand that a family farm is not merely a physical asset; it is a legacy written on the hearts of those who work the soil by our ancestors and is being read, or will be read, by our descendants. On a personal note, our family has been the caretakers of this soil where we live and farm for well over 100 years, and I'm making it my personal mission to remove any obstacle threatening to end this legacy, not only for our farm, but for every farm family in Georgia. We all stand on the shoulders of giants. I will work hard with my committee members and fellow farmers to seek out meaningful solutions that will ensure our rural, family-owned generational farms remain the backbone of our state's economy and our nation's food security."
Created by Senate Resolution 800, the Joint Study Committee on the Generational Sustainability of Family Farms will evaluate the challenges facing family farms. The study committee will also explore policies and investments that the General Assembly can pursue to support existing markets, develop new and innovative domestic markets, decrease the cost of inputs, adequately prepare the next generation of farmers and address systemic challenges contributing to the declining farm economy.
Speaker Burns also appointed the following study committee members: State Representatives Jaclyn Ford (R-Tifton), David Huddleston (R-Roopville) and Robert Dickey (R-Musella).
