UWF hosts America at 250 symposium on civic republicanism, economic freedom and dynamic citizenship

The University of West Florida's Academy of American Civic Republicanism, in collaboration with Florida International University's Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom, will host America at 250: Civic Republicanism, Economic Freedom and Dynamic Citizenship on Aug. 21-22. The event will explore the relationship between civic virtue, economic liberty, entrepreneurship and the responsibilities of citizenship as the nation marks its 250th anniversary.

"As we continue to celebrate the remarkable milestone of reaching 250 years as a nation, it's a great time to reflect on the ideas and principles that have shaped our country and the responsibilities that come with citizenship," said UWF President Manny Diaz Jr. "UWF is proud to provide a place where scholars, community members and leaders can come together to explore important questions and engage in meaningful dialogue."

Beginning at the Museum of Commerce on Friday evening and continuing through Saturday afternoon at the UWF Conference Center, this two-day symposium will bring together members of the UWF community and the broader public for keynote presentations, panel conversations and audience discussion. Businessman Robert Luddy, founder and president of CaptiveAire Systems, founder of Thales Academy Schools and educational philanthropist, will be the keynote speaker for the event. Remarks and panel discussions will include President Manny Diaz Jr. and other scholars, business leaders and civic thinkers.

"Civic dynamism that flows from the combination of economic liberty and public spiritedness has always been the catalyst for American prosperity and freedom," said Dr. Clifford Humphrey, vice president of strategic initiatives. "When enterprising citizens take ownership of their communities by solving their own problems and meeting their own needs through civil and business associations, those communities thrive."

As the United States celebrates America's 250th anniversary, UWF strives to bring together community leaders through a timely public conversation about citizenship, civic virtue and economic freedom. Attendance is free, but seating is limited and advance registration is required.
