Cholera Response Supplies Delivered to South Sudan Refugee Camp
As the rainy season begins across South Sudan, a shipment of cholera treatment supplies and emergency medical aid has arrived in Juba to support health services at the Gorom refugee camp, where overcrowded conditions have heightened the risk of infectious disease outbreaks.
Originally established in 2010 to house approximately 2,000 Ethiopian refugees, the camp has grown significantly following the conflict in neighboring Sudan and now hosts more than 22,000 refugees. The arrival of seasonal rains is expected to further increase the risk of cholera and other waterborne illnesses throughout the region.
The shipment was provided through Direct Relief in coordination with Peace Winds Japan, an international humanitarian organization supporting water, sanitation, hygiene, and health services across South Sudan. Supplies included cholera treatment kits, IV therapy supplies, disinfectants, collapsible water containers, and a UNICEF-standard emergency medical tent equipped with lighting infrastructure to help support outbreak response efforts in the field.
The shipment marked Peace Winds South Sudan's first international medical aid import into the country, requiring extensive coordination related to customs clearance, Ministry of Health approvals, and import documentation.
"Judging from our experience last year, these medications will most definitely save lives that would have otherwise been lost." -James Gannon, CEO Peace Winds America
Volunteers Prepare in Mexico, Ahead of Hurricane Season
Direct Relief staff in Mexico recently partnered with volunteers from medical technology company BD Mexico to assemble 500 kits filled with personal care items ahead of the upcoming hurricane season. The event included the assembly of 250 individual kits and 250 larger kits for families containing basic hygiene and over-the-counter supplies, including toothbrushes, shampoo, combs, and other essential items intended to support communities affected by severe weather emergencies.
During the event, Direct Relief Mexico also announced a new agreement with BD Mexico that will support future in-kind medical donations from within the country, helping strengthen local response capacity and preparedness efforts ahead of future emergencies.
Medical Aid Shipment Supports Chronic Disease Care in the Dominican Republic
Direct Relief recently shipped more than $450,000 in medical aid to Fundación Solidaria del Divino Niño Jesús (FSDNJ) in the Dominican Republic, a longtime partner organization that works closely with the country's Ministry of Health and public healthcare network to help address gaps in access to care for vulnerable populations.
The shipment included adalimumab, an injectable biologic medication used to manage rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune conditions by helping control inflammation and chronic pain. Because the medication is typically required long-term and can be prohibitively expensive for many patients, access can be difficult for healthcare facilities serving low-resource communities.
According to Dr. José Abel Domínguez, Medical Director at FSDNJ, the medication will be integrated into the foundation's broader healthcare services and used to support patients with chronic inflammatory diseases, particularly individuals with moderate to severe psoriasis.
Direct Relief has partnered with FSDNJ since 2013 to support healthcare access for vulnerable communities throughout the Dominican Republic. The organization also operates a charitable pharmacy and clinic providing primary care, dental, and mental health services. The shipment arrives as parts of the Dominican Republic continue recovering from recent severe rainfall and flooding.
