October 15 is White Cane Safety Day

On Oct. 7, Monona Mayor Mary O'Connor presented Nate Wegehaupt, a Monona resident and staff member of the Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually Impaired, with a proclamation recognizing Oct. 15 as White Cane Safety Day in the City of Monona.

A white cane is a universally recognized symbol representing visual impairment. Did you know that Wisconsin's White Cane Safety Law requires that motorists come to a full stop before approaching closer than 10 feet to a pedestrian who is using a white cane or service animal? White Cane Safety Day is a great time to remind motorists to be safer, more attentive drivers in order to enhance the safety of all pedestrians, including children, elders and people with disabilities.
