LOS ANGELES - Equality California, the nation's largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, announced its first legislative endorsement of the 2026 election cycle on Tuesday - proudly backing longtime LGBTQ+ and immigrant rights advocate Juan Camacho for California's 26th State Senate District. Camacho enters the race with broad local support, including endorsements from Assembly Democratic Caucus Chair Rick Chavez Zbur and Assembly Majority Whip Mark González, who represent overlapping portions of the district in the Assembly.

Equality California Executive Director Tony Hoang released the following statement:

"Equality California is proud to endorse Juan Camacho for State Senate District 26. As an immigrant and civil rights leader, Juan has spent his life fighting for justice, equity, and dignity for all communities - including LGBTQ+ Californians. Juan's unwavering commitment to protecting our fundamental freedoms and uplifting the voices of those too often left behind makes him exactly the kind of champion we need in Sacramento. We're confident that Juan will continue to be a powerful advocate for full, lived equality and will deliver results in our fight to ensure every Californian, no matter who they are or whom they love, can thrive."

Juan Camacho currently serves as president of Equality California Institute, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit arm of Equality California that focuses on leadership development, civic engagement, and health equity for the LGBTQ+ community. While Equality California Institute does not participate in political campaigns or endorsements, Equality California's endorsement reflects Camacho's long-standing commitment to advancing civil rights through both public service and community leadership.

On Monday, Camacho officially announced his candidacy for Senate District 26:

"My parents brought me and my siblings to Los Angeles chasing the promise of the American Dream. Growing up, I saw firsthand what opportunity looks like - when my dad got a good job with healthcare, when we gained legal status and citizenship, and when public school educators believed in me.

I'm running for State Senate to fight for working families - by creating good jobs, supporting small businesses, making housing more affordable, raising wages, and ensuring access to quality, affordable healthcare. I'm running because I believe that Los Angeles is strongest when we embrace our diversity and stand up to those who try to divide us. We can build a future where every Californian - no matter their race, background, gender, or sexual orientation - has the chance to thrive."
