Jim Barge Connects Leadership Experience with Professional Development at Harvard

With more than 38 years of leadership experience in military service, corporate leadership and higher education, Jim Barge, Visiting Assistant Professor of Management in Mount St. Joseph University's School of Business & Communication, brings extensive real-world experience to the classroom.

Jim Barge served 10 years on active duty in the U.S. Navy submarine force and 16 years in the Navy Reserves, retiring as a U.S. Navy Captain. He later held leadership and process improvement roles with GE Aerospace before transitioning to higher education. He holds an MBA from Xavier University and is completing his Ph.D. at the University of Exeter, with academic interests including leadership, ethics, organizational change, leader development and artificial intelligence.

This summer, Jim attended Teaching with Cases, a day-and-a-half seminar at Harvard Business School held July 30-31. "The class was great! Over 50 higher education colleagues from across the country and globe came together for a day and half to learn from HBS Case Teaching experts Bill Schiano and Alexandra Sedlovskaya." Topics included effective questioning and listening, discussion planning, classroom expectations, discussion leadership and the role of artificial intelligence in teaching. He added, "Appropriately they used cases to teach about case method teaching!"

In addition to incorporating his new learnings in his own classes, Barge plans to share his seminar takeaways with colleagues in the School of Business & Communication, bringing new approaches to the Mount classroom and further connecting academic learning with real-world leadership and innovative teaching.
