Joint statement by the EU agri-food & feed value chain on New Genomic Techniques

Together with several partners from the EU agri-food & feed value chain*, FoodDrinkEurope calls on the rapid conclusion of the negotiations on the future NGTs Regulation, as an essential piece of legislation for an innovative and resilient agri-food sector.

Thanks to intense and fruitful discussions led by the Polish Presidency, good progress has been made towards the adoption of the future Regulation on NGTs.

Although there are still some important remaining points to be agreed upon, we urge the EU institutions to remain committed to finding a proportionate compromise on the proposal. In a context where sustainability, climate change and food security challenges are becoming more and more pressing, the EU urgently needs a science-based and adequate legal framework for NGT plants and derived products to strengthen the competitiveness and resilience of European agriculture as well as the food and feed supply systems. This implies, in particular, not imposing traceability and labelling requirements for Category 1 conventional-like NGT plants and products. This will also enable the EU to keep pace with regulatory developments in third-country trading partners.

We have full confidence in the Danish Presidency's ability and willingness to conclude the negotiations on this dossier, which clearly falls within their priorities of stimulating innovation for greater competitiveness, resilience, and supporting the green transition.
