Students Engage as Sustainable Changemakers with The Green Coalition

Allegheny College is the first college in Pennsylvania to be carbon neutral, but the commitment to sustainability doesn't just stop there.

Students involved in the Green Coalition promote sustainability year-round by hosting on-campus events to make it accessible to the entire community. The organization is open to students of all majors and meets weekly in Carr Hall, home to the Department of Environmental Science and Sustainability.

My favorite aspect of Green Coalition is creating new opportunities for people to learn about sustainability, without forcing an all-or-nothing approach to the concept," says Hannah Tomer '27, who serves as co-president. "Sometimes, sustainability means building community with your peers.

The coalition is a combination of five former student groups, including:

  • Bike Share
  • Food Recovery Network
  • Green Students of Color Society
  • Students for Environmental Action
  • Sustainable Design Team

One distinctive event the group hosts is the Trashion Show. Modelled outfits are made entirely from recycled materials, creating an opportunity to discuss reducing textile waste through clothing swaps or mending workshops.

The Green Coalition also tackles food insecurity by recovering surplus food from dining halls and redistributing it. A food pantry on the top floor of the Henderson Campus Center is managed by the student organization as well. It provides food to students in need throughout the academic year.

From highway cleanups to bike maintenance workshops, the Green Coalition is busy at work taking action to steward the world around them.

Get involved in over 130 student-led organizations on campus and learn about our dedication to sustainability.
