Ray Vollmer: 1957-2026

Ray Vollmer, former anatomy education specialist for the Adventures in Medicine and Science (AIMS) Program at Practical Anatomy and Surgical Education, died Tuesday, July 14, 2026. He was 69 years old.

Vollmer retired from SLU in 2025 after more than two decades of service as the AIMS anatomy education specialist.

"Since joining the program in 2001, Ray devoted his career to inspiring a passion for science, medicine and healthcare in thousands of students, many of whom went on to become physicians and healthcare professionals in the St. Louis region and beyond," said John R. Martin III, Ph.D., director of the Center for Anatomical Science and Education.

During Vollmer's tenure, AIMS earned 16 consecutive Pinnacle Awards from the Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration from 2008 through 2024. Upon his retirement, Vollmer received the AIMS Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his exceptional service and lasting contributions.

"Ray had a remarkable ability to bring anatomy to life, making science engaging and memorable for students both in person and through videoconferencing," Martin said. "Ray's enthusiasm, dedication, plain-spoken manner, quick wit and passion for healthy living inspired countless students, educators and colleagues to make healthier choices and pursue careers in medicine. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

"He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will continue through AIMS and the many lives he inspired."

Vollmer grew up in Ferguson, Missouri, where he attended St. Sebastian Catholic Grade School before graduating from De Smet Jesuit High School. He attended Western Illinois University, where he proudly played for the Leathernecks and earned his bachelor's degree. He later earned an MBA from Fontbonne University.

The family will receive friends at St. Paul Catholic Church in Fenton at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, until the time of the funeral Mass at 1 p.m.
