ARLINGTON, Va. - The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) today announced that NEMA member ABB, Inc. has earned Make It AmericanTM certification for its Mebane, North Carolina facility, validating its supply chain management systems and operational practices. The company also obtained NEMA's product-level certification for meeting Build America, Buy America (BABA) domestic content requirements across six Low-Voltage Power Distribution Equipment (LVDE) and High-and-Medium Voltage Distribution Equipment (HVDE) product lines manufactured at that facility.
ABB becomes the first NEMA member to achieve BABA product certification for HMVDE - equipment that forms the backbone of America's grid infrastructure. From utility substations to industrial facilities and renewable energy installations, high- and medium-voltage equipment represents some of the most complex and essential components in our nation's energy system. These products, including ABB's certified Load Interruptible Switchgear (LIS) and Switchgear lines, maintain grid safety and reliability across critical infrastructure.
"ABB's certification demonstrates that even the most sophisticated electrical products can meet rigorous domestic content standards," said NEMA President and CEO Debra Phillips. "LVDE and HMVDE are essential to modernizing our grid infrastructure at speed and scale."
"ABB has achieved Make It American certification in both the HMVDE and LVDE categories, covering a range of products across medium-voltage and low-voltage switchgear, switchboards, and panelboards. This demonstrates our commitment to deliver compliant, American-made solutions that power critical infrastructure across the US," said Deni Miller, Business Leader for ABB Distribution Solutions, North America. "At our manufacturing facility in Mebane, NC, and others, ABB has made significant investments in U.S. manufacturing as part of our commitment to meet growing customer demand for advanced electrification solutions. Coupled with the highest standards for supply chain operation and the Make It American program, we are adding real value for customers who rely on transparent BABA compliance documentation to meet their Buy America requirements."
ABB is currently pursuing Make It American certification for additional manufacturing facilities, building on the momentum of its Mebane achievement.
Introduced in April 2025, the Make It American certification program enables companies to validate their supply chain management systems and operational practices through rigorous, third-party expert audits - ensuring alignment with BABA domestic content requirements for infrastructure projects receiving federal funds. The program brings transparency and reliability to the federal marketplace, providing greater certainty to manufacturers, government agencies, and procurement officials aiming to source materials and products with greater levels of U.S.-manufactured products.
Today, companies can certify their facilities to NEMA's Make It American Process Standard and their products across six categories using NEMA's BABA Product Specifications through this federally recognized program.
