RIO GRANDE, NJ - The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, a service offered through Cape May County Division of Aging and Disability Services in partnership with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), is actively seeking volunteers for the upcoming tax season.
RSVP, the nation's largest volunteer network for individuals aged 55 and older, supports a variety of community-based initiatives across Cape May County. Through this partnership, volunteers are trained and certified to assist residents with free basic income tax return preparation as part of the VITA program.
No prior tax experience is required. Free training and certification are provided by the IRS and the New Jersey State Tax Office. Volunteers can also choose roles that do not require tax law certification.
VITA volunteers prepared more than 1,000 tax returns for Cape May County residents this past tax season. With the next season quickly approaching (January through April 2026), additional volunteers are needed to continue this vital service.
"VITA volunteers provide a truly essential service," said Commissioner Will Morey, "Not only do they help ease the burden of tax preparation for residents, but they also play a key role in putting money back into the hands of community members among those who need it most."
Those interested in volunteering for the VITA program-or exploring other opportunities through RSVP-are encouraged to contact Rachel Sanfo, RSVP Program Director, at 609-886-3400.
