DNC Chair Ken Martin and DNC LGBTQ+ Caucus Chair Sean Meloy released the following statement marking the start of Pride Month:
"During Pride Month, Democrats acknowledge the incredible progress that LGBTQ+ Americans have accomplished since the protests at Stonewall. We recognize the trailblazers who made these victories possible - visionary trans activists like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, who courageously led and supported anchoring the modern movement for LGBTQ+ liberation; leaders like the late Rep. Barney Frank who paved the way for others; advocates who worked to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell; activists like Jim Obergefell, Edie Windsor, and others who fought to extend marriage equality to all 50 states; champions who have secured conversion therapy bans to protect LGBTQ+ youth; and so many trans people fighting targeting by their own government for rights. All of these victories occurred because Americans courageously fought for them, and this month, we celebrate these heroes while recommitting to the work that still remains.
"Our fight continues as long as extreme right-wing politicians seek to roll back this progress and relentlessly attack and dehumanize LGBTQ+ Americans to do it. Amid this precarious moment for our nation, Democrats will not back down. We will continue to fight to end discrimination in housing and healthcare, we will strive to keep our neighbors, especially our trans neighbors, safe, and we will extend the promise of freedom and dignity for everyone who calls our nation home."
