The Nigerian regions of Kano and Enugu have opened two new legal centres for victims of trafficking.

The new centres expand the network of legal assistance for trafficking victims in Nigeria and have been launched following extensive joint work by authorities, legal institutions and social organisations.

The Nigerian regions of Kano and Enugu have inaugurated two new legal centres for victims of human trafficking, a key intervention aimed at providing specialised legal assistance and support services. Building on the successful model promoted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) with three existing centres in the states of Lagos, Edo and Delta, FIAP-within the framework of the migration governance support project-is expanding this vital network by adding the new centres.

The FIAP, in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Network of Civil Society Organizations Against Trafficking, Abuse, and Child Labour (NACTAL), carried out extensive advocacy visits in the states of Kano and Enugu in July 2025. These visits mobilized key state, legal, and academic actors, enabling the formation of Technical Working Groups (TWGs) that developed the constitution, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and institutional structure required for the immediate launch of the two new centers.

The inauguration ceremonies marked the beginning of the centers' operations and strengthened their credibility among local stakeholders. The purpose of these ceremonies is to formally open the centers, announce the operational guidelines developed by the Technical Working Groups, ensure institutional commitment to their sustainability, and raise awareness among communities and professionals about the legal services available to victims of trafficking.

The centers are expected to become officially open and operational, to consolidate the commitment of the actors involved, to increase awareness of the services offered, and for media coverage to contribute to the project's visibility.
