Following Visit to Mexico City, Congressman Krishnamoorthi Calls for End to Trump’s U.S.-Mexico Trade War

WASHINGTON - Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) returned this week from a high-level delegation visit to Mexico City, where he met with key members of Mexico's Congress of the Union and leaders from the National Federation of Latino Chambers of Commerce & Association, as well as its partner organizations, to discuss the importance of the Mexico-United States trade relationship. During the course of the trip, Congressman Krishnamoorthi met with the leader of Mexico's Chamber of Deputies - Dip. Sergio Gutiérrez Luna, Presidente de la Mesa Directiva de la Cámara de Diputados - as well as Dip. Maiella Gómez, who leads the Commission on Labor and Social Welfare, and Dip. Maribel Solache, who leads the chamber's Commission on Foreign Relations.

"Mexico is not just our neighbor-it's our leading trading partner and an essential friend to the United States," said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. "Strengthening that partnership and meeting the real threats our nations face means ending President Trump's unnecessary trade war, which is harming businesses and driving up costs for consumers in both nations, including my constituents in Illinois. As I said in Mexico City: Somos socios. Somos alliados. Somos democracias - We are partners. We are allies. We are democracies."

During his meetings, Congressman Krishnamoorthi emphasized the shared values and mutual economic interests that bind the two nations. Mexico is the United States' top trading partner, as bilateral trade between the nations totaled approximately $840 billionlast year, while Illinois exportsas much as $81 billion in goods to Mexico each year, with imports to Illinois from Mexico totaling nearly $13 billion.

In addition to the discussion of the need to end trade disputes between the two nations, Congressman Krishnamoorthi touched on growing efforts by the Chinese Communist Party to spread misinformation in Latin America and expand its leverage to pursue its own goals in Mexico and in the Western Hemisphere more broadly.

The visit reflects Congressman Krishnamoorthi's continued leadership on issues related to American foreign policy, trade, and strengthening partnerships abroad, including through his role as Ranking Member of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party.
