Names of Bettendorf's Snowplows to be Revealed During Annual Public Works Day on Saturday, May 16

May 5, 2026 - The votes are in. Will the City of Bettendorf's snowplows be named Sleetwood Mac, Sled Hot Chili Pepper, The WingMan, Salty Dawg, Plowasaurus Rex, Snowmer Simpson, Clearopathra, Blade Runner, ctrl-salt-delete, or Scoop Dogg?

On Saturday, May 16 at 10 a.m. during the city's annual Public Works Day, Mayor Pro Tem Scott Naumann will reveal the results of the Snowplow Naming Contest. After receiving nearly 100 submissions and choosing the 10 most popular, 212 people voted for their favorite name.

The public is invited to attend and enjoy all the free activities taking place during Public Works Day. For more information, please see below.

April 24, 2026 - After a successful nomination period, the City of Bettendorf is encouraging the community to cast their vote for their favorite snowplow name and make plans to attend a special event to hear the winners.

The city received nearly 100 submissions to its Snowplow Naming Contest between April 7 and April 23. There is now a poll with the 10 most popular submissions. Cast your vote here! The poll will be open through Monday, May 4 and the winning names will be revealed during Public Works Day on Saturday, May 16 (Time TBA). For more information, please see below.

April 7, 2026 - "Rooted in Service, Powered by Community" - That's the theme of National Public Works Week, taking place May 17-23, 2026 through the American Public Works Association.

To kick off National Public Works Week, the City of Bettendorf's Public Works Department is hosting its Annual Public Works Day on Saturday, May 16 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Bettendorf Public Works Annex (4403 Devils Glen Road).

This is a family-friendly, fun-filled event that includes:

  • Public Works trucks and machinery on display
  • Free food served by Public Works staff (hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream, and soft drinks)
  • Kids' activities
    • Inflatable obstacle course
    • Snowplow blade painting
    • Face painting
  • Giveaways
    • Compost - bring your own bucket!
    • Trash/Yard Waste stickers
    • Free bus pass
  • Interactive opportunities
    • Ride the Bettendorf Transit bus
    • Learn About the "EnviroScape" model
    • Learn About household hazardous materials and e-waste
    • Donate old bicycles/bike parts

"On this Public Works Day, it is important to celebrate our dedicated staff and their service to our community by ensuring a high-quality life for all our residents," said Brian Schmidt, Public Works Director.

NAMING CONTEST: After a successful Recycling Truck Naming Contest in 2024 and Snowplow Naming Contest in 2025, the City is holding another Snowplow Naming Contest for two of its new snowplows in 2026! To submit a name, visit www.bettendorf.org/NamingContest by Thursday, April 23 at noon. On Friday, April 24, the City will launch a poll for people to cast their vote on their favorite name. The two winning names will be revealed at Public Works Day on May 16.
