May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, and the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), along with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reminds all drivers that motorcyclists' safety is everyone's safety.
Drivers - do your part and give motorcyclists extra room to stop and maneuver. Always look out for motorcyclists when turning, changing lanes, and at intersections.
Motorcyclists - make yourselves visible by always using your headlights. Wear protective clothing and dress for a crash, not just the ride, and never travel in a vehicle's blind spot.
Looking to perfect your riding skills? Every year from March through November, DMV offers six types of motorcycle safety courses for various skill levels, including an instructor-level course for those interested in becoming a certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Rider Coach.
Course benefits include professional training and up to 15% off your motorcycle liability insurance. Plus, upon successful completion of the course, graduates will receive a certificate allowing them to obtain their motorcycle endorsement without additional DMV testing.
"It is the responsibility of every driver and motorcyclist to do their part in making Delaware roads safer for all who travel on them," said Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles Director Amy Anthony. "Drivers must watch for motorcycles as they are smaller and more difficult to see, and motorcyclists need to constantly stay alert, be conscious of their surroundings and the actions of other drivers," continued Anthony.
Last year, 17 motorcyclists were killed on Delaware roadways. As of Wednesday, May 6, 2026, four motorcyclists have been killed, with two of those fatalities occurring this week.
Regardless of their mode of transportation, DMV urges everyone to make safety the top priority, especially as we head into the warmest months of the year when we see the most activity from motorcycles, bikes, and pedestrians.
