Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content

2026-07-15T13:11:00
European Union

Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content is applicable from August 2026.

KEY ASPECTS

  • On June 10, 2026, the European Commission published the voluntary Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content to support demonstrations of compliance with Articles 50.2, 50.4, and 50.5 of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689.
  • Providers must ensure that content generated or manipulated by their artificial intelligence systems is marked in a machine-readable format and can be detected as artificial. For signatories, the code establishes a multi-layered approach, combining digitally signed metadata and imperceptible watermarks. Deployers must mark deepfakes and manipulated texts.
  • The obligations under Article 50 apply from August 2, 2026, and noncompliance is punishable under Article 99. Providers of systems placed on the market before that date have until December 2, 2026, to comply with Article 50.2.
