Gov. Rhoden Celebrates Passage of SB 96, Refocuses on SB 245

PIERRE, S.D. - Today, Governor Larry Rhoden's plan to cut property taxes, Senate Bill 96, passed the House of Representatives, meaning that the bill is on its way to the Governor's desk. Governor Rhoden celebrated his bill's passage and refocused on delivering the passage of Senate Bill 245next week.

"Senate Bill 96 will deliver significant property tax relief, and together with SB 245, it will deliver the largest property tax cut in South Dakota history," said Governor Larry Rhoden. "I appreciate the Legislature's open communication and good process to deliver SB 96 to my desk. This bill will give homeowners in each county the option to reduce their own property taxes."

Earlier this week, Governor Rhoden worked with legislative leadership in both chambers to negotiate an agreement to deliver property tax relief to South Dakotans. The deal is built on the following principles:

  • Property tax relief should be felt both statewide and in the communities where taxes have increased the most;
  • This relief should be felt in both the short- and long-term; and
  • Property taxes should be more predictable and more transparent for South Dakotans.

In his press conference today, Governor Rhoden said that "We're taking this agreement one day at a time, one bill at a time," and the next bill up is SB 245, which will be on the House floor on Monday. Governor Rhoden is committed to helping that bill secure passage.
