JAKARTA, INDONESIA, 15 October 2026 - Xendit, the payments infrastructure company, today released the Xendit Ecommerce Payments Momentum Report 2026 with ecommerce intelligence firm Cube. It draws on a survey of 6,000 online shoppers in six markets, including 1,000 Indonesians, and Xendit transaction data.
In Indonesia, 51% of shoppers say a missing payment method was the main reason they dropped an online purchase in the past three months, the highest share in Southeast Asia. At the same time, real-time payments are gaining ground: QRIS, Bank Indonesia's national QR standard, grew 142% on Xendit's platform between January 2025 and April 2026.
"Indonesian shoppers have already moved on from cash. The question now is whether merchants' checkouts have caught up. In our report, we saw that the most common reason shoppers in-market walk away from a purchase is that the payment method they want isn't there," said Nazim Ali, President of Xendit. "And the key is not just to offer the one payment method, but understand the context surrounding some of the fastest-growing methods - and the business momentum surrounding them."
Real-time payments are gaining ground
QRIS is the fastest-growing payment method in Indonesia, according to the report: up 142% on Xendit's platform between January 2025 and April 2026, compared with 83% growth in credit card volume. Bank transfers, the other main real-time rail, feature in an estimated 52% of surveyed shoppers' purchases.
Xendit is a licensed QRIS acquirer, so merchants can accept QRIS through Xendit without appointing a separate bank acquirer. The report finds businesses increasingly want the "direct-to-rail" setups, which can give merchants clearer data visibility, simplify reconciliation, refunds and day-to-day payment operations while helping to mitigate fraud risk. QRIS also supports cross-border payments with Thailand's PromptPay and Malaysia's DuitNow, and the report expects Southeast Asia's real-time rails to move closer to a regional network model in 2027.
Shoppers walk away when their payment method is missing
A missing payment method is the top checkout frustration in Indonesia, ahead of Malaysia (31%). E-wallets remain Indonesia's most-used way to pay online, featuring in an estimated 60% of surveyedshoppers' purchases, and 70% of shoppers use one for at least half their purchases, more than in any other market surveyed. GoPay, OVO, DANA and ShopeePay continue to divide that market, and no single wallet has won yet.
Habits differ within Indonesia too. In the report, for example, event ticketing platform Megatix, a Xendit merchant, shares that virtual accounts are key for buyers in Jakarta, while international cards account for most transactions in Bali.
COD is falling faster than in most of Southeast Asia
Four in 10 Indonesian respondents (40%) use cash-on-delivery (COD) much less than a year ago, second only to Thailand (45%). Even so, COD still features in an estimated 40% of surveyed shoppers' purchases, more than its share of e-commerce value suggests.
Asked what would get them to switch, shoppers in all six markets, including Indonesia, most often named a discount or cashback, ahead of faster refunds and trust in payment security.
Marketplace sales are climbing again
Sales on Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop, Southeast Asia's three largest marketplaces, grew about 33% year-on-year in Q1 2026 after a slower 2024. With more orders going through checkout, a missing payment option now costs merchants more sales.
Shoppers are also changing how they decide what to buy. Across Southeast Asia, 53% use generative AI to discover products and 78% to research and compare them, ahead of search engines (74%) and review sites (72%).
Taken together, the findings show Indonesian shoppers moving away from cash and onto QRIS, e-wallets and bank transfers faster than most of the region, but not onto any single method. For merchants, the question is no longer whether customers will pay digitally, but whether the checkout offers the way each one of them wants to pay.
