Keywords Explained: VoNR

A technology that enables voice calls using 5G connectivity alone

VoNR, which stands for Voice over New Radio, is a technology that enables the transmission of voice data using 5G network standards. Until now, even on 5G networks, data-based voice call services primarily relied on VoLTE (Voice over LTE), which uses 4G networks. With VoNR, however, voice calls are carried entirely over a 5G standalone (5G SA) network built on dedicated 5G infrastructure, allowing calls to be completed using 5G connectivity alone.

This technology reduces times between initiating calls and establishing connections, enabling faster and smoother calls. In addition, because high-speed, high-capacity 5G connectivity can be maintained during voice calls, VoNR is expected to support new communication services in the future-such as combining voice calls with advanced data features like high-quality video sharing and AR (Augmented Reality).

SoftBank Corp. (TOKYO: 9434) is working to expand service coverage areas and compatible devices for VoNR-based voice services while actively developing services that leverage 5G SA's unique capabilities. Through these efforts, SoftBank is aiming to deliver a more convenient communication environment and enhance customer satisfaction.
