WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09) announced the award of $1.4 million in federal funding for the Shamokin-Coal Township Joint Sewer Authority. The funding was included in the FY26 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Act, recently signed into law.
The funding will support critical wastewater infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving operational efficiency, protecting water quality, and helping keep sewer rates affordable for residents. Planned improvements include replacing aging equipment in the Primary and Secondary Settling Tanks and installing a Headworks Grit Chamber to prevent system damage caused by debris.
Congressman Meuser said, "While wastewater infrastructure often goes unseen, it is critical to public health and environmental protection. Working in cooperation with the Authority's General Manager, Paul Petrovich, I was pleased to secure this $1.4 million federal investment to strengthen Northumberland County's wastewater system. This funding will help keep costs manageable for local families, ensure reliable sewage treatment, and further protect our environment. I look forward to seeing this project move forward and the positive impact it will have for the Shamokin-Coal Township community."
Shamokin-Coal Township Joint Sewer Authority's General Manager, Paul A. Petrovich, said, "We are extremely grateful to Congressman Meuser for securing our Authority $1.4 million in grant funding to make vital improvements to the treatment facility. When I heard the news directly from the Congressman, I was ecstatic. Grants are very competitive, and we know funding is tight for everyone. These grants not only allow us to keep our plant within DEP (PA Department of Environmental Protection) guidelines, but they also allow us to keep our sewer rates in check, which allows people to keep more of their hard-earned money in their pocket."
