Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Somerset, an RWJBarnabas Health hospital, recently supported the borough's Emergency Services Center on Gaston Avenue. The center is home to the borough's police and fire departments, rescue squad and Office of Emergency Management. The borough used funds from the hospital to purchase fitness equipment for the center.
"We are so grateful for all of our first responders and the critical services that they provide to our hospital and our hometown of Somerville," said Deirdre Blaus, Chief Administrative Officer, RWJUH Somerset. "We are proud to support the completion of their Emergency Services Center."
The property for the Emergency Services Center was purchased by the borough in 2018 with funds from a Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) agreement with RWJUH Somerset.
"Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset has been a tremendous partner in caring for our community," said Somerville Mayor Brian Gallagher. "Our residents are fortunate to have world-class medical care right here in Somerville. We appreciate the hospital's support, along with the support of the Kalafer family, which helped us outfit the fitness center, and officially completes our Emergency Services Center."
The hospital celebrated its 125th anniversary last year. From its modest beginnings in a small house on East Main Street in Somerville, it has grown to a 343-bed comprehensive medical center on nearby Rehill Avenue that is part of New Jersey's largest academic health system. It is also one of Somerset County's largest employers with 2,100 employees. The hospital was recently designated for the fourth consecutive time by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Magnet® hospital for nursing excellence. It has achieved an "A" Patient Safety Grade from the Leapfrog Group and is honored by Healthgrades as one of America's 250 Best Hospitals.
