China Media Group Puts Chinese Cinema on the Global Stage

The China Media Group Film Culture Carnival was officially launched in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, underscoring the growing global influence of Chinese cinema as both an industry and a cultural force.

According to a recent international survey conducted by CGTN and Renmin University of China, involving over 12,000 respondents across 41 countries, Chinese film and television content is increasingly becoming a key channel through which global audiences understand China. Among the various sources of cultural exposure, Chinese film and television ranked second-just behind social media-highlighting its expanding reach and relevance.

The findings reflect a broader shift in how Chinese stories are being told and received. In recent years, domestically produced films have diversified significantly in both genre and subject matter, spanning comedy, martial arts, animation, realism, and espionage. This evolution has enabled the industry to appeal to a wider range of audiences while offering a more nuanced portrayal of both traditional and contemporary China.

Beyond consumption, engagement with Chinese content is also shaping perception. Watching Chinese film and television productions ranked among the top cultural experiences for international audiences, alongside travel to China and its cuisine. This points to a growing appetite not just for entertainment, but for cultural connection through storytelling.

The survey further highlights strong global sentiment towards Chinese culture. A significant majority of respondents believe that China's cultural influence is rising, with many noting the appeal of both its traditional heritage and modern popular culture. Importantly, nearly two-thirds of respondents expressed positive views on Chinese film and television, particularly in their ability to preserve and reinterpret traditional cultural elements in a contemporary context.

This growing influence is mirrored in the industry's performance. China's box office revenue for 2026 has already surpassed 12.5 billion yuan, reflecting both a strong domestic market and increasing international interest. As Chinese cultural elements gain visibility across global audiences, cinema is playing an increasingly important role in fostering cross-cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

The survey also points to broader recognition of China's role in global cultural dialogue, with many respondents acknowledging its contribution to promoting exchanges between civilisations and offering perspectives relevant to global development.

As Chinese cinema continues to evolve, its role extends beyond entertainment-emerging as a platform for storytelling that connects cultures, shapes perceptions, and contributes to a more interconnected global narrative.
