Major Media Outlets Highlight Pro-Moderation Arguments

Several major U.S. publications recently published columns reflecting what most Americans believe: that moderate, responsible enjoyment of alcohol beverages can be part of an active lifestyle.

Wall Street Journal : "[Moderate drinking] has been shown to decrease stress. Plus, drinking often involves socializing, which the Surgeon General says has major health benefits."

New York Times: "I have seen too many conflicting and changing opinions over the decades about ingredients like trans fats, oat bran, carbohydrates, caffeine and alcohol…In the end, I can think of no better guiding principle than moderation."

And in an Atlantic article "Is Moderate Drinking Okay?" thought leader Derek Thompson examined alcohol in the context of the surgeon general's previous advisory on our nation's loneliness & isolation crisis.

"Alcohol is not like a vitamin or pill that we swiftly consume in the solitude of our bathrooms, which can be straightforwardly evaluated in controlled laboratory testing," wrote Thompson. "At best, moderate alcohol consumption is enmeshed in activities that we share with other people: cooking, dinners, parties, celebrations, rituals, get-togethers-life! It is pleasure, and it is people. It is a social mortar for our age of social isolation."
