SOUTH LOS ANGELES - At approximately 5:00 PM on July 16, 2025, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported outside fire in the 5400 block of South Avalon Boulevard. Firefighters arrived to find a large quantity of hand sanitizer burning on pallets, along with a nearby shed.
Due to the high alcohol content of the hand sanitizer, the fire is being allowed to burn off in a controlled manner. Water cannot be used safely in these conditions, as alcohol can float on water and spread flames. Crews are instead focused on protecting nearby structures and limiting environmental impact from runoff.
The fire has exposed, but not involved, a one-story commercial building. Firefighters built sand dams to protect storm drains and requested large quantities of Class B foam for targeted suppression.
At the height of the incident, 66 LAFD personnel were assigned, including Hazardous Materials specialists and support from LADWP for downed power lines. LA County Health HazMat was also requested. LAPD, DOT, and LA Street Services responded to assist with traffic control and stormwater mitigation. No injuries were reported.
Approximately 40 firefighters remain on scene, rotating in for relief as the fire continues to burn. Total burn time is expected to last throughout most of the night, with LAFD maintaining an active presence to ensure public and environmental safety. No cause has been determined at this time.
