Rep. Doreen Carter to Receive Black History Award at Defend Black History Summit in Atlanta

ATLANTA - State Representative Doreen Carter (D-Lithonia) will attend the Defend Black History Summit where she will receive the Black History Award on Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 1 - 5 p.m. at the Loudermilk Conference Center in Atlanta.

Rep. Carter's nomination for the award came from the National Education Association (NEA) and Color Of Change. The NEA is a professional organization representing public school teachers, support personnel, higher education faculty and staff, retired educators and students preparing to enter the teaching profession. Color Of Change is a nonprofit organization dedicated to civil rights advocacy, with a focus on utilizing online resources to strengthen the political voice of African Americans.

"Since being elected, Rep. Carter has been a fearless advocate and defender of public education," said Lisa Morgan, President of the Georgia Association of Educators (GAE). "Through her work on the House Education Committee, Rep. Carter has stood firmly against efforts to defund public schools and divert tax dollars from public schools to pay for private school vouchers. Furthermore, she has been an outspoken critic of the 2022 Protect Students First Act, otherwise known as the divisive concepts bill, which has jeopardized the teaching of complete and accurate Black history in Georgia schools. Rep. Carter has proven through her track record that she is a fighter for Black history and for public education."
