On Friday, May 2, 2025, at approximately 3:43 p.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred on Hana Highway (36) approximately 52 feet northeast of Nonohe Place in Spreckelsville.
Preliminary investigation reveals that a black 2007 GMC Sierra truck was traveling eastbound on Hana Highway in the opposing lane of travel while overtaking other vehicles. At the same time, a black 2023 Nissan Altima sedan was traveling westbound in its proper lane of travel when the truck collided head-on with the sedan.
The operator of the truck, a 52-year-old male from Paia, sustained major injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The operator the sedan, a 68-year-old male from Idaho, sustained major injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The front-passenger of the sedan, a 73-year-old male from Idaho, sustained major injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The rear-passenger of the sedan, a 63-year-old female from Idaho, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The truck's airbags did not deploy, while the sedan's front and side curtain airbags did. All occupants of both vehicles were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision.
The involvement of speed is believed to be a factor in this collision. The involvement of drugs and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.
