CMS Building Foundational Infrastructure for Digital Healthcare Ecosystem

Following the recent release of the Health Technology Ecosystem Request for Information (RFI) , today the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) hosted an in-person listening session to discuss the RFI and ways to use the health technology innovations to enhance patient care and promote efficiencies in the healthcare system. The meeting brought together stakeholders from across the healthcare ecosystem - including patients and caregivers; technology companies, data providers, and networks; healthcare providers and value-based care organizations; and payers - to share their insights and best practices on ways to leverage digital health technologies to reduce fraud, cut administrative burdens, and deliver higher-quality care to millions of beneficiaries.

During the meeting, CMS announced its commitment to move forward on a number of initiatives designed to help build the foundational infrastructure needed for a healthcare system that will help fulfill Secretary Kennedy's vision to Make America Healthy Again. These initiatives include:

  • Building a dynamic, interoperable national provider directory;
  • Bringing modern identity verification processes to Medicare.gov ;
  • Expanding availability of CMS' Blue Button 2.0 patient access application programming interface (API);
  • Transitioning CMS's Data at the Point of Care pilot to general availability; and
  • Enhancing CMS' participation in trusted data exchange.

These efforts and the RFI reflect CMS' broader modernization agenda to accelerate digital health innovation, strengthen data security, enhance program integrity, and drive operational efficiencies across Medicare, Medicaid, and federal marketplaces. CMS is encouraging all interested parties to submit their comments on the RFI by June 16, 2025.
