[Notice] Service discontinuation for magnetic stripe cards – Security upgrade to chip cards

Dear Valued Customers,

Pursuant to Circular 18/2024/TT-NHNN issued by the State Bank of Vietnam, Shinhan Bank Vietnam Limited ("Shinhan Bank") would like to inform you of the discontinue of all transaction services for magnetic stripe cards and transaction using the magnetic stripe on bank cards since April 25, 2025. Please switch to a chip-enabled card to continue using our services. Additionally, be aware of the risk of card skimming and take necessary precautions to protect your account.

1. What should you do before your magnetic stripe card becomes inactive?

  • If you are using a magnetic stripe card issued by Shinhan Bank, please bring a valid identification document to the nearest branch to upgrade to a chip card before April 25, 2025.
  • If you have already upgraded to a chip card, please disregard this notice.

2. What is card skimming?

Card skimming is a fraudulent technique in which criminals steal card information by attaching a device to a card reader. The stolen data can then be used to create counterfeit cards or make unauthorized withdrawals.

2.1. How does it work?

  • Criminals install a device on ATM card readers or POS machines.
  • This device captures the card number, PIN, CVV code, and expiration date.
  • The stolen information may then be transmitted to nearby devices controlled by attackers.

2.2. How to prevent card skimming?

  • Always insert your card directly into the POS machine yourself.
  • Check for any unusual signs on POS machines and ATMs (hidden cameras, card readers, ATM keypads).
  • Change your card PIN regularly (at least once every three months).
  • Use SMS/App notifications to monitor withdrawals and authorized transactions.

2.3. What to do if your card is skimmed?

  • Immediately report any suspicious transactions to the bank.
  • Request the bank to lock your account and issue a new card.
  • Provide evidence of fraudulent transactions to the bank or relevant authorities.
