KIRKSVILLE, Mo. (Oct. 8, 2026) - Ameren Transmission Company of Illinois (ATXI) recently reached an agreement with the NEMO Fair Association to establish a laydown yard to store equipment and materials for Ameren's Northern Missouri Grid Transformation Program. Once the transmission project is complete, the NEMO Fair Association will benefit from approximately 35 acres of upgraded, level ground that can be used for additional parking, storage or other future needs.
"This partnership is a win-win for ATXI and the NEMO Fair," said Nick Rudis, project manager for Ameren. "Major infrastructure projects require space to safely store materials and equipment. By partnering with the NEMO Fair Association, we're able to strengthen the grid and support this region's future energy needs while also leaving behind improvements that can support the fairgrounds for years to come."
Workers are leveling the land, adding rock and installing fencing as part of site improvements. Construction of the laydown yard is expected to be completed by the end of the year, and ATXI has signed a four-year lease agreement to use the land.
"We're always on the lookout for opportunities that help us improve the fairgrounds and better serve the community," said Alan Whittom, president of the NEMO Fair Association's board of directors. "We look forward to using the additional space. It will give us flexibility to support activities and events long after the project is completed."
After construction is finished, the laydown yard will hold supplies for the Northern Missouri Grid Transformation Program. ATXI, Missouri Joint Municipal Electric Utility Commission (MJMEUC) and Ameren Missouri are working together on this portfolio of new energy projects. The program includes more than 255 miles of new 345 kilovolt (kV) transmission lines developed in two phases across northern Missouri.
