FERC rolls out 2026 taxonomy update for energy reporting

Posted on January 11, 2026 by Editor

On 26 March 2026, the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) will adopt its latest suite of taxonomies, validation rules, and rendering files for its regulatory forms. The updated taxonomies are already available for testing, open for feedback until 2 March.

This latest update affects FERC Forms 1, 1-F, 2, 2-A, 3-Q (electric and natural gas), 6, 60, and 714, and will apply to filings covering the first quarter of 2026 and beyond. Alongside minor technical improvements, it introduces compatibility with updated rendering and validation tools, including Xule v1.2, Arelle v2.35.18, and the XBRL US Inline Renderer (XENDR), improving both machine-readability and human accessibility.

FERC's transition to XBRL-based reporting began in 2019, and has been evolving steadily, with iterative updates to ensure continued relevance and technical rigour. By refining the technical foundations of its XBRL implementation, the FERC aims to ensure that energy sector data remains transparent and easy-to-use.
