Public invited to celebrate completion of US 395 paving and Complete Streets project in Chewelah

$6.7 million highway rehabilitation project added new sidewalks, bike lanes, crossings and other safety improvements

CHEWELAH - The Washington State Department of Transportation and the city of Chewelah are inviting the community to celebrate the completion of improvements along US 395. A ribbon-cutting and boot-stomp ceremony will take place Tuesday, Sept. 22.

The celebration will mark the completion of a project that repaved roughly 5 miles of US 395 between Hafer Road and Sand Canyon Road. The project also added features designed to make it safer and easier for people to walk, bike, roll and drive through Chewelah.

Many of the Complete Streets improvements were shaped by community input. WSDOT and the city of Chewelah worked with residents and community partners to find ways to improve how people move through and connect within the community.

Improving the road for everyone

The $6.7 million project rehabilitated US 395 by removing worn-out pavement and repairing parts of the underlying roadway. Crews then placed new hot mix asphalt. The roadway was last paved in 2009.

Within Chewelah city limits, the project added new and enhanced sidewalks, bicycle facilities, pedestrian crossings, lighting and other Complete Streets features. The project also included drainage improvements, rumble strips and other roadway upgrades.

US 395 Hafer Road to Chewelah project celebration details

When: 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22

Where: Everett Jenne Memorial Park/Chewelah City Park. The event will be held at the park's center stage located off US 395 between East Park Lane and East Lincoln Avenue.

Details: The public is invited to join WSDOT, the city of Chewelah and community partners to celebrate completion of the US 395 paving and Complete Streets project. The event will include remarks from project partners and an opportunity for community members to see and learn more about the improvements.
