WVU Alert: WVU cancels in-person classes Monday (Jan. 26), shifts to remote work for most employees

As a winter storm continues to affect the region, West Virginia University is canceling all in-person classes, closing in-person operations and shifting most employees to remote work for the Morgantown Campus on Monday (Jan. 26).

Campus will be closed for normal operations. However, employees who have the option to work remotely or on a hybrid schedule are not affected by the closure and should continue their normal schedules in remote capacities and not travel to campus.

Essential on-site employees who have not already done so should communicate with their supervisors to determine if they are required to work on-site during the closure.

Online classes are not affected.

The University operations decision follows guidance from Monongalia County emergency officials urging people to stay off area roads for the duration of the storm.

"Additional snow and dropping temperatures mean road conditions, which have largely remained hazardous through the day, will only get worse overnight," University Police Chief Sherry St. Clairsaid. "If you do not have to travel, please stay off the roads for the safety of yourself, other drivers and first responders."

WVU Health Sciences faculty, staff and students who work in patient care areas or in clinical rotations should check with their dean, program director or clinic manager, if they have not already received instructions for Monday (Jan. 26). All WVU Dental clinics will be closed. The parking shuttle service for HSC employees that runs from the WVU Innovation Corporationto the Health Sciences area of campus will not operate Monday.

Facilities Management is continuing snow removal on University property, supporting the ongoing off-campus work of crews with the West Virginia Division of Highways, Monongalia County and City of Morgantown.

"Our employees have been out since the snow started Saturday night (Jan. 24) and we will continue to work to ensure our campus sites are accessible to members of the University community," said Charles "Chuck" Roberts, associate vice president for Facilities Operations.

"There are times when the rate of snowfall or sleet requires our teams to revisit already treated areas. We ask for patience as we work through the ongoing effects of the storm in extremely cold temperatures."

University sites, including Dining facilities, that are scheduled to open Monday (Jan. 26) to continue to serve student and community needs will be operating with limited hours. The WVU Visitors Centeris closed Monday (Jan. 26).

As of now, the University is scheduled to resume regular operations at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 27).

University officials are continually monitoring reports from the National Weather Service, as well as state, local and campus conditions.

Necessary updates will be provided through a variety of outlets, including the WVU Safety Notification System, MIX email and students.wvu.edu, ENews email and enews.wvu.edu. Social media accounts such as @wvusafetyofficial on Instagram, @WVUsafety on X and the WVU Safety and Wellness Facebook page will also share updates.

WVU Institute of Technology and WVU Potomac State College previously announced closures for Monday (Jan. 26). WVU Extension will follow its internal inclement weather policy.

A WVU Alert is part of the University's three-tiered emergency notification system.
