Known as a positive and patient problem-solver with that Southern California swagger, Chad Watson is also a strategic powerhouse, which has led to his recent promotion to director of the Center for Research and Creative Activity in the Division of Research and Economic Development. He brings nearly two decades of Boise State experience and a people-first philosophy to the role.
"Chad has a gift for bringing out the best in people," said Jana LaRosa, assistant vice president for research advancement and strategy. "Whether it's his team, faculty or colleagues across campus, his approach is simple: 'What do you need? Let's figure it out together.' He doesn't believe in one-size-fits-all solutions, and that collaborative mindset contributes to our success."
Watson joined Boise State in 2007, where he managed a research lab and taught senior capstone courses for the Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering. After helping establish the department's doctoral program, he transitioned to research development roles across the College of Engineering before joining the Center for Research and Creative Activity in late 2021.
"Chad is the person who gets you to the finish line, no matter the obstacles," said Moji Sadegh, associate professor of civil engineering. "He is a deep-thinking strategist whose optimism and natural strengths open pathways for big ideas to grow into impactful projects. Beyond his professional talents, Chad is also a genuinely caring friend - generous with his time, thoughtful in his support and deeply invested in the success and well-being of those around him."
Nancy Glenn, vice president of research and economic development celebrated Watson's role within the division.
"Chad's contributions have been nothing short of exceptional. He brings both steadiness and a sense of lightness to complex work, making him a trusted partner and a pleasure to collaborate with," she said. "His impact extends far beyond our division, and this promotion reflects the respect he has earned across campus."
When asked what contributes to his success, he said, "At the end of the day, it always comes back to the people around me. I try to put myself in their shoes to see where they are and how I can best support them." He also credits the talent of the Center for Research and Creative Activity team and the entire division's shared commitment to walk alongside researchers at every stage of the journey, from the first spark of an idea through to lasting impact. That dedication shows up across more than 100 proposal development engagements each year, and represents the full range of support that turns research ambitions into reality.
