Halloween is Here: Trick-or-Treat, Big City Boo, and Safety Tips for Families

Halloween is Saturday, October 31, with traditional residential trick-or-treating hours from 6 to 8 p.m. Families are encouraged to plan ahead, follow basic safety precautions and look out for one another throughout the evening.

Halloween Safety Tips

The City encourages parents, caregivers, motorists and trick-or-treaters to keep the following safety tips in mind:

  • Stay visible: Choose bright-colored costumes when possible, add reflective tape and carry flashlights or glow sticks to help children remain visible to drivers.
  • Choose safe costumes: Make sure costumes fit properly to prevent trips and falls. Use face paint or makeup when possible instead of masks that may obstruct vision.
  • Use sidewalks and crosswalks: Walk on sidewalks whenever available, cross streets at intersections and look both ways before crossing. Avoid running between parked cars.
  • Supervise children: Young children should always be accompanied by a responsible adult. Older children should travel in groups, follow a planned route and have a designated check-in time.
  • Inspect treats: Parents and caregivers should examine candy and packaged treats before children eat them. Discard any items that appear opened, damaged or suspicious.
  • Visit welcoming homes: Trick-or-treat at homes with porch lights on and respect private property.
  • Drive with extra caution: Motorists should slow down in residential neighborhoods, remain alert for children and avoid distractions while driving.

Residents handing out candy are encouraged to keep walkways and porches well-lit and free of obstacles to help prevent falls.

Celebrate Early at Big City Boo on Friday, October 30

The Halloween fun begins early with the City of Cleveland's annual Big City Boo, taking place Friday, October 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Neighborhood Resource and Recreation Centers throughout the city.

Families can bring their children to enjoy Halloween-themed activities in a fun, community-centered environment. Big City Boo offers an opportunity for children and families to celebrate the season and connect with their neighborhood recreation centers.

Residents are encouraged to check with their local recreation center for event details and any additional information.

The City of Cleveland wishes all residents a happy, healthy and safe Halloween!
