Medica Foundation Announces $2.4 Million in Emergency Relief Funding to Support Communities Statewide

MINNETONKA, MN. - The Medica Foundation announces $2.4 million in emergency relief funding to support Minnesota communities facing increased strain on health and social services. The investment prioritizes flexible, rapid support for community-based organizations delivering essential care to people experiencing barriers to health access.

The funding will reach a broad network of nonprofit partners providing mental and chemical health services, early childhood health programs, primary care, and rural health support across the state. Grantees include organizations offering trauma-informed mental health care, substance use support, maternal and infant health services, dental care for children, parenting and home-visiting programs, and culturally rooted care for Black, Indigenous, immigrant, and refugee communities.

"We've been listening closely to our community partners and responding to what they're seeing on the ground," said Elyse Coleman, Senior Program Manager for the Medica Foundation. "The Foundation recognizes that these challenges disproportionately impact communities with inequitable access to healthcare, making targeted, flexible support critical in this moment. This investment helps ensure critical services remain available during a time of growing uncertainty and need."

A significant portion of the investment - $1 million - will support current Medica Foundation grantees working to sustain critical programming in mental and chemical health, as well as early childhood health. These organizations are embedded in the communities they serve and are often the first point of care for individuals navigating language, cultural, geographic, or financial barriers.

The Foundation also committed $500,000 to NAMI Minnesota (National Alliance on Mental Illness) to support both immediate community needs and the long-term stability of the state's mental health infrastructure. As a statewide leader, NAMI Minnesota mobilizes resources for families and youth, convenes cross sector partnerships, and advances policy solutions that strengthen the mental health system.

"At a time when communities across Minnesota are facing rising trauma, uncertainty, and barriers to care, this investment from the Medica Foundation allows us to respond in ways that are grounded in connection, trust, and lived experience," said Marcus Schmit, Executive Director of NAMI Minnesota. "We know that healing does not happen in isolation-it happens in the community. This support strengthens our ability to expand access to mental health education, support families, and stand alongside local partners to ensure that no one has to navigate mental health challenges alone."

An additional $500,000 will support Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) across Minnesota. These safety-net clinics provide integrated medical, behavioral, dental, and behavioral health care - often in multiple languages - for uninsured and underinsured populations. As demand continues to rise, particularly among immigrant and low-income communities, this funding will help clinics maintain access to care and reduce disruptions in essential services.

Earlier this year, the Medica Foundation also allocated $400,000 to support rapid-response efforts through trusted philanthropic partners. In February, $200,000 supported the Immigrant Rapid Response Fund through the Women's Foundation of Minnesota , and $200,000 supported the Economic Response Fund through the Minneapolis Foundation, ensuring resources move quickly to organizations responding to urgent, statewide needs.

In response to continued pressure on community health systems, the Medica Foundation increased its annual investment in mental and chemical health initiatives to $3 million this year. Community needs across Minnesota continue to shift as funding instability and community stressors evolve.
