Designed specifically for beginners and those new to watercolor, Oklahoma State University is offering an online short course to expand watercolor horizons. This watercolor 101 course focuses on relaxation and is a great way to introduce novice painters to watercolor.

Landscape Watercolor for Relaxation is a three-week online course using a project-based teaching approach. Participants can learn at their own pace from home with weekly lessons released throughout April. Taught by Qing Luo, OSU Extension specialist and associate professor in the OSU Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, the class is beginner-friendly and combines foundational techniques while promoting creativity and relaxation.

"People often feel art is intimidating, but learning from the comfort of home will help them unlock their artistic expression," she said. "There is no prior art experience required, and participants can utilize their own space and work at their own pace each week."

Luo said participants will explore various art concepts, including step-by-step watercolor techniques, and interpretive and abstract landscape painting. Pre-recorded lessons will be delivered weekly.

"The course is designed to help participants experience the calming, restorative benefits of painting while building foundational watercolor skills," Luo said.

Participants will complete a watercolor work each week, and Luo will share simple ways to turn the artwork into framed pieces, bookmarks or greeting cards.

"Everyone should expect to spend about two to four hours per week studying and practicing," she said.

To help enhance this artistic experience, Luo is offering a weekly live office hour session via Zoom.

The course fee is $135 and includes a professional watercolor set, paintbrushes, watercolor paper, pencils, artist tape and instructional materials. Materials will be shipped to participants in Oklahoma at no charge. A $20 shipping fee will be assessed to those outside of Oklahoma. The registration deadline is March 26. Participants will need access to a printer to print a few handouts and premade sketches each week. Registration and additional information are available online.

"I taught this course on campus last year, and I thought an online option this spring would make it accessible to more people," she said. "The class was very well received and is a great outlet for calming minds and encouraging relaxation."
