(July 14, 2025) - San José Clean Energy (SJCE), the City of San José's not-for-profit electricity provider, informs the community that several federal clean energy incentives are scheduled to phase out in the next months, due to recent federal budget legislation. "San José has long been a leader in climate action, and we remain focused on supporting an equitable clean energy future," said City Manager Jennifer Maguire. "Even as federal support begins to shift, we will work to ensure our residents and businesses have access to the tools and resources they need to build a healthier, more sustainable future." The federal incentives, established under the Inflation Reduction Act, are financially critical for residents investing in clean energy: Federal Tax Credit Expiration Date Up to $7,500 for new electric vehicles (EVs) and up to $4,000 for used EVs. September 30, 2025 30% tax credits for heat pump water heaters and HVAC systems (up to $2,000). December 31, 2025 30% tax credits for home battery systems and solar. December 31, 2025 30% tax credit for installing an EV charger at home (up to $1,000). June 30, 2026 "Recent federal changes will make it harder for families to go green - which is why it's more important than ever to act now and take full advantage of the incentives still available," said Mayor Matt Mahan. "Through the end of the year, residents can still qualify for federal support to invest in clean energy. Let's not leave money on the table - building a cleaner, more sustainable future will take all of us." Combine Incentives with SJCE Rebates There's still time to save more-if customers act fast. SJCE offers rebates that can be combined with federal incentives to help lower energy bills and shrink your carbon footprint. SJCE currently offers up to $12,000 in rebates for heat pump HVAC systems and heat pump water heaters and up to $14,900 in rebates for adding battery storage to new or existing solar. The rebates from SJCE are only available while funding lasts, so apply soon to take advantage of both programs. "At San José Clean Energy, we remain committed to offering energy savings and rebates to support our residents and businesses," said Lori Mitchell, Director of San José Clean Energy.
