At approximately 7:54 a.m. Friday, May 8, Columbia Fire Department (CFD) companies were dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 400 block of McBaine Avenue.
CFD companies arrived within three minutes of initial dispatch to find black smoke and fire showing from a single-story home. Firefighters immediately entered the structure to simultaneously search for potential residents and begin the fire attack. The flames were contained to the room of origin and firefighters had the fire safely under control within approximately six minutes of arrival.
All occupants inside the home at the time of the fire evacuated prior to CFD arrival. There were no reported injuries. Unfortunately, one cat perished at the scene.
A total of five fire companies, two battalion chiefs, one safety captain and one fire marshal with 19 personnel responded to the scene.
The Columbia Fire Marshals Battalion has determined the nature of the fire to be accidental due to combustible materials left too close to a heat source.
