Yakym Votes to Pass the SAVE America Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Rudy Yakym (IN-02) voted in favor of the SAVE America Act to ensure America's elections are safe and secure.

"You need a photo ID to drive a car, board a plane, or buy a beer, so why should voting be any different?" Rep. Yakym said. "This is common-sense legislation to protect the integrity of our elections and ensure that only American citizens cast ballots in American elections."

BACKGROUND:

The SAVE America Act requires individuals registering to vote in federal elections to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship at the time of registration. It prohibits states from accepting or processing a federal voter registration application without such proof, while requiring states to establish an alternative process allowing applicants to submit other evidence to demonstrate citizenship.

The House has previously passed the SAVE Act twice in consecutive Congresses to require proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections - and why House Republicans have reintroduced and continued advancing that legislation in this Congress.

Now, the SAVE America Act builds on that effort by strengthening election integrity standards, including requiring valid government-issued photo identification to vote in federal elections.

THINGS YOU NEED AN ID FOR:

  • To drive.
  • To open a bank account.
  • To buy cold medicine.
  • Renting a hotel room.
  • Buying a beer.
  • Boarding a flight.
  • Donating blood.
  • To sign up for government benefits.
